Local Ottawa Area Conservation and Heritage Sites to Enjoy this Summer
The Ottawa area has so many beautiful places to enjoy during the summer months. From hiking, and kayaking to picnicking and learning about the area’s history, there are many wonderful sites to explore. Here are four of our favorites:
Shirleys Bay
Located at the western edge of Canada’s Capital Greenbelt, Shirleys Bay is an internationally significant conservation area on the Ottawa River. The natural wetland features along the shore, as well as the inland wetlands, provide many benefits, including improved water quality and thriving wildlife habitats. Shirleys Bay is great for outdoor recreational activities, including hiking, boating, cycling, birding and picnicking.
Morris Island Conservation Area
Morris Island Conservation Area is located along the Ottawa River near the community of Fitzroy Harbour. This 47 hectare site consists of forested woodlands and wetlands. With 6 km of trails, this beautiful island encourages you to enjoy the best of Ontario’s weather throughout the seasons: Hike, canoe, kayak, fish and much more. Morris Island Conservation Area is managed by Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority (MVCA) and jointly owned by Ontario Power Generation and the City of Ottawa.
Pinheys Point
Nestled on the banks of the Ottawa River approximately 40 minutes west of downtown, Pinhey’s Point features a nearly 200-year-old manor house and surrounding ruins and is an Ontario Heritage Trust site. Scenic views, historic buildings, stone ruins and rolling green hills come together to create one of the most spectacular places in Ottawa to relax, learn, and explore. The site is a popular destination for boaters and cyclists.
Mill of Kintail
Situated on 154 hectares amidst field, forest and the Indian River, explore year-round the six kilometers of trails on this heritage property. The Mill of Kintail boasts a large number of picnicking areas and a big covered shelter adjacent to a playground and half basketball court. Visit the R. Tait McKenzie and Dr. James Naismith Museum in the summer months to learn about the area’s two national historic figures.
