Stittsville A Brief History

stittsville_01First settled in 1824, Stittsville in its early days was nothing but vast wetlands and swamps, and developed over time into a farming community that was based upon the area’s rich and fertile soil. The area was named after Jackson Stitt – a man who was not only Stittsville’s first postmaster and the one to own the most land in the area, but who was responsible for raising the town in the early 1950s. The town’s site was originally located at the intersection of Carp Road and Hazeldean Road, and was comprised of a few homes, a small inn, a local general store and a post office.

Stittsville’s location changed, however, after the Great Carleton Fire ravaged the area in 1870. The fire burned for nearly a week, swallowing over 250,000 acres of land throughout Ottawa, Carleton Place and Smiths Falls, leaving the area in utter devastation. Once regrowth began happening later that decade, the community was rebuilt two kilometers south of its original location, which is where it remains today. What started out as a sleepy outpost town comprised of little more than a train station, grain elevators, and a few hotels became a full-fledged village in 1961, offering residents all sorts of local businesses and services.

The quiet farming community of Stittsville, which at one time was home to fewer than 500 residents, quickly became a busier, bustling town after Highway 417 was extended in the 1970s and residents were able to travel to and from Ottawa with ease; and the expansion of Ottawa’s high tech industry facilitated rapid growth and development throughout Stittsville, increasing its population steadily and turning it into the vibrant suburb that it is today.
