Katrina Guerin, Communications Officer with the Western Ottawa Community Resource Centre presenting Joan Smith with a commemorative plaque
Tuesday, February 7, 2017
Good afternoon Joan,
Kanata is super grateful for our fantastic 2017 sponsors – thanks so much!
Home should, by nature, be a safe haven from the world. When violence and abuse happen within intimate relationships, home can be the most unsafe place, leading women to flee their homes and become homeless. According to the Canadian Women’s Foundation, on a given night, 3,491 women and their 2,724 children sleep in shelters because it isn’t safe at home, making violence against women the leading cause of homelessness in women and children in Canada.
Chrysalis House is a 25-bed shelter in western Ottawa. It is a place where a woman can go to protect herself and her dependents from violence and abuse. At the shelter, women can focus on her and her dependents’ needs and build a safer life from violence and abuse. Besides basic shelter and needs, we provide one-on-one and support groups for women and children, referrals, and recreational and therapeutic activities.
Our WALK will raise money to help Chrysalis House serve about 150 women and children this year. We invite you to register yourself or put together a team of your friends, family and colleagues to raise funds and awareness for this cause. Come have fun, raise money and support the women and children of our community!
Again, we thank you so much for your support.
Warmly,
Katrina Guerin
