17 Dec Ottawa Celebrates The Re-Opening of Elgin Street
Residents, local businesses, Mayor Jim Watson and Somerset Councillor Catherine McKenny celebrated the reopening of Elgin Street on Monday, December 16.
Elgin Street is a popular destination for Ottawa residents offering great dining, shopping and entertainment, and we’re happy to have it back!
Elgin Street has been closed since January to revitalize the street and renew underground infrastructure.. some dating back to 1874. The work will continue in early 2020 with crews removing hydro poles along the West side of the street and connecting underground utilities.
With completion in Fall of 2020, we will see wider sidewalks for pedestrians, shared use lanes, transit facilities, flexible street parking spaces, trees, benches and public art.
“Elgin Street has been closed to traffic for almost a year, and I want to thank the local residents and business owners for their support and patience throughout the construction project. I look forward to seeing the final result in 2020, and I know Elgin Street will quickly become a bustling pedestrian destination for residents and visitors alike.” – Mayor Jim Watson
