Hosting guests this holiday season? Create a space they won’t want to leave

If you are hosting guests this holiday season, welcome them with a fresh guest room. Guest bedrooms have a reputation for being the ugly ducklings of most homes. The term “guest room” may even evoke memories of the mismatched quilts and old-fashioned décor of a relative’s house or, even worse, a pull-out couch in a cluttered and undecorated room.

So, before your guests start arriving for the holiday season, it’s time to transform your guest room into a five-star oasis they won’t want to leave.

First step is to declutter and clean

If you have been using that spare room for temporary storage, i.e. seasonal clothes, laundry, etc, now is the time to tidy it up and either give items away or put them in their right place. There are many organizations in Ottawa that you can donate items to, see some suggestions.

A fresh clean room is inviting. Don’t forget to dust the baseboards and trim, clean the windows and vacuum. Your guests will appreciate a fresh set of sheets and pillowcases.

No headboard? No problem

Spending money on an expensive bed may be out of the question for a guest room. But sacrificing style isn’t. A graphic painting, print or photograph can serve as the headboard above a simple frame for an eye-catching look. Another suggestion is an extra set of pillows with fresh shams, double as adding some interest to the bed & room and can be used by your guest if reading, etc.

Curtains, blinds, window treatments

Check the window blinds and curtains, are they functioning properly? do they need a dust or wash? Make it easy for your guests to have some privacy.

Accentuate the space

Adding an accent rug underneath the bed is a fantastic way to visually fill the space if you don’t have a big furniture budget for your spare room. Whether you have carpeted or hardwood floors, this look is modern and trendy plus it adds warmth to the floor when your guests get out of bed in the morning.

Create luxury with plants and flowers

Nothing says luxury like a fresh vase of flowers on the nightstand or a lush, tropical plant for a pop of natural colour. Not only can you add these touches at the last minute, but you can also repurpose plants from different rooms so you don’t forget to care for them after your guests leave. If you want low maintenance, there are so many artificial plants to choose from.

Add something extra!

For guests it so nice to be welcomed. Leave a mug/water bottle, fresh set of towels and a note thanking them for coming and your own personal message!
